Global Day of Code Retreat 2011

Yesterday I participated in the Dallas gathering of the Global Day of Code Retreat. Corey Haines (@coreyhaines) has been leading free Code Retreats for a while now, where programmers of all languages and skill levels can come together for a full day of intentional practice. Read more about it at coderetreat.org, you’ll thank me.

The typical format is to pair off and work on Conway’s Game of Life for 45 minutes, then throw the work away. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. Each time, changing partners, using different languages, and caring more for the activity of writing great code, than writing a finished app.

I had a great time with everyone, enjoyed working in different languages, and looking at problems from different angles. I don’t think I implemented the app in the same way twice all day. This was very cool, thanks to everyone who worked to make it happen, and thanks to Corey Haines for spreading the word.

I have to do this again!
